Asphalt shingles cover the vast majority of homes across Alamogordo, NM, which makes shingle repair the job our crews handle more than any other. What surprises most homeowners, and even some contractors, is how much technical skill genuine shingle repair actually takes. Treating it as a simple swap-and-go task, without accounting for the details that determine whether a repair survives the next big storm, is how so many "quick fixes" end up needing to be redone.
Getting the shingle match right is usually the hardest part of any repair. Manufacturers regularly tweak profile design, weight class, and granule color blends across product runs, so shingles bought today may not line up perfectly with what's already on your roof. Mismatched profiles create weak points where water can find its way in at the seam. Mismatched weight classes create a patch of roof with different wind resistance than everything around it, which is often the first section to fail in a bad storm. We keep a stock of commonly used shingle profiles on hand and lean on our supplier relationships to track down close matches whenever our inventory falls short.
Nailing technique matters more than almost anything else in a shingle repair, and it's also where we see the most mistakes, whether from DIY attempts or crews that rush the job. Every shingle has a manufacturer-specified nailing zone, and placing fasteners outside that zone weakens the wind resistance of the shingle above it. Drive a nail too deep and it tears through the mat instead of holding it in place. Leave one sitting too high and the shingle above can't seal flat against the course beneath it. Our crews know the correct nailing zone for every shingle type we install and hold to consistent placement and depth on every job.
The last piece of a proper shingle repair is sealing and a check of the surrounding flashing. When temperatures are cool or the repair is on a shady, north-facing slope, the factory sealant strip may not activate fully on its own, so we hand-seal each shingle course to guard against wind lift through that first winter. We also inspect nearby flashing on every repair call in Alamogordo, NM, since whatever damaged the shingles has often taken a toll on the flashing too, and patching shingles while leaving worn flashing in place only solves half the problem.
